Inspired by a famous quote by Socrates, who declared just before his execution: "The unexamined life is not worth living."
Of paramount importance to Socrates was self-reflection and the quest for wisdom and truth. Ultimately he chose death over exile, preferring to die rather than go to a place where he would not be able to study and investigate the wisdom of The Pythia.
I wanted to capture a reflective and mysterious expression in this sculpture and on a whim decided to leave the eye sockets hollow to further encapsulate this idea. I felt that sculpting the eyes would give too much identity to the figure and wanted to leave interpretation wide open.
